PROJECT DETAILS
Duration: 5 Days, November 2023
Type: Mobile App
Individual conceptual project
Help individuals find and connect with potential roommates
Help set rules and connections between individuals
Discover flatmates and spaces to stay in
The concept of this app was a design challenge I found online. I wanted to challenge myself by building on someone else's idea. My goal was to finish this product within a week to see if I could manage the style of a design sprint.
Design Challenge:
Once the ideal roommate is found, what else can this product do to make the roommate experience better?
Individuals seeking roommates
Individuals seeking to share housing
Individuals often have differences with their roommates
Roommates aren’t what they expect when starting to live together
The process of finding and talking is often 'annoying'
Create a product to discover potential roommates and spaces
Help connect individuals that are compatible
Design features to better the experience of the roommate process
To better understand the process of obtaining a roommate. I conducted some research on what individuals go through when finding their next roommate and their experiences with roommates.
The process individuals take to find a roommate
The difficulty of finding a compatible roommate
Their expectations and the reality of their roommate
Whether a roommate needs to be a ‘friend’
(IF) What were their reasons for leaving their roommate?
I wanted to research through a large sample size to gather a wider range of issues and experiences, opting to conduct research online. (Not the best research method, but I needed a quick source in order to finish my goal of 5 days)
Facebook and Craigslist are the most popular methods; others include apps
Roommate listings are often 'sketchy', leading people to research safety
Prioritise someone they would get along with
People set up calls or plans to experience how they are in person
Verification of identity and status is important
Roommates often have habits that are unannounced
Like to set house rules before hand
Don’t pay on time
Don’t follow house rules
Ignore the partner’s preferences
Isn’t who they expected
Some of the experiences and advice online
Roommates need to understand each other better
The process lacks trust and expectations
Focus on and build on the connection between roommates
Create a more personalised experience
Use unique filters and visuals to enhance the finding experience
Help discover a roommate that meets your requirements
Create a connection between a newly discovered roommate
Roommates should respect each other
Roommate to follow rules
Roommate to be trustworthy
To share rent in a location
To make a friend
To follow and listen to each other

Get to know your roommate
Based on my research, a good roommate is someone who gets along with you.
So how might we create a personal connection to these strangers?
Create a similar onboarding style to dating apps by grabbing the user’s hobbies, interests, and, in this case, living preferences. Profiles will showcase and outline any similarities or differences you and the person have.
This creates a quick and easy description of what this person is
Why they may be potentially a good or bad roommate
Adds another layer of personality
Tinder and Bumble app as reference.
Once the ideal roommate is found, what else can this product do to make the roommate experience better?
Roommates have house and personal rules, so why not integrate it into the app?
In direct messages
Both users add and remove rules from a list
Both users need to confirm a rule for it to be “complete”
When a change is made, it is sent in the message chat
In addition to the standard voice call, the option of a video call allows users to interact physically and get a sense of one another.
Face-to-face communication reveals a truer personality
The housing spaces in the app will also contain an option to have a 3D tour of the location, where the user is able to view the space in a virtual way like Google Street View with a roommate. (The person who starts the call controls the tour.)
Attempt to replicate an in-person tour together
Express opinions on the housing instantly through both looking at the same visual
Creates an activity for potential roommates to interact and discuss

With the theme of the app being human interaction:
Orange: deliver a sense of optimism, warmth, and agreeableness
Purple: creates ambition, pleasure
Find potential roommates by discovering profiles that outline your interests.
Connect and ensure some ground rules before moving in.
Browse through avaliable housing spaces with the option of filters and a map view.
Ways to connect roommates of interest
What else can we bring, rather than other messaging?
Creating swipe interactions in the Figma prototype
Designing more towards the app rather than the design challenge
Better UI for map display
Add credit score verification
Profiles can be clearer and more informative
Explores more ways to solidify the connection
