PROJECT DETAILS
Duration: 6 Weeks, October 2023
Type: Mobile App
A Individual conceptual project
A mobile application that tracks and motivates gym members through gamification.
Users create and grow an in-game avatar corresponding to their effort.
Aiming to give a feeling of progression, satisfaction and community
Current gym members
New gym members
Members who want extra motivation
50% of new gym members quit within the first six months (Glofox, 2022)
Members lose motivation and consistency
More quitters are evident with the growing attraction of the gym in social media
How can we motivate and help members stay healthy at the gym?
To understand why members quit and lose motivation in the gym, I conducted several user interviews to gather information on why members get demotivated. (6 participants)
From the gathered results, I have identified the pain points into 3 themes:
Lack of progression
Having certain expectations
Not having a comfortable environment
Workout tracker with elements of gamification
Unique user progression along with a community
Motivational aspects
How can we make the user feel like they have progressed with their workouts?
How can we make the user feel satisfied based on their expectations?
How can we make a space for users to feel a sense of your friends being present?
An example of a new gym member's journey map (Without Jim GO).
The concept of my initial design was a simple workout tracker with a:
Community aspect
The ability to input custom workouts
Unique muscle tracking
However, the features and UI lacked a identity, feeling similar to "Hevy".
But there were features that I liked, the weekly counter and workout streak. These were added to encourage the user to come back, inspired by Duolingo.
During my design process, I asked myself "How can I explore the concept of motivating the user through similar systems?"
By adding gamification to the app, elements of motivation can be made with components of fun.
Concept of creating an avatar that levels up depending on your workouts, acting like a persona or friend. Where they will grow and progress through levels of different muscles, achieving special badges and cosmetics as rewards.
Why a avatar is good for motivation?
Immediate visual progress
Immediate satisfaction through rewards
Ignores physical levels of strength and appearance
Growth regardless if you actually feel or see it
As long as a user is able to commit consistently, a skinny member is able to become the same level as a buff member by using progression through levels.
Narrows and simplifies progression into a single unit ‘levels’
However, this brings up the problem of users logging incorrect or fake numbers. There are assumptions that must be made for this app.
That users will log the correct hours honestly
A visual flow of the user's progress from the launch of the application to the discovery of all functionabilities in the app and taking some actions.
Some early concept sketches of what the app would look like.
Ideas on how the user's avatar can be more interactive, acting like a friend.
Users can now view their progress through an avatar resembling their work.
Users are guaranteed results through levels and in app currency (SweatBucks).
Users can interact with friends to see their progress, workouts, and avatars.
Creating a appealing avatar design with Figma
Designing a way to showcase progression
How to ensure the user is actually working out
More statistics for a deeper insight on growth
Social interaction
More engaging interactions, e.g. quests, goals
Ideate with intention
